    How is narcolepsy diagnosed?

    #65754 Reply

A physical examination and medical history are needed to diagnose narcolepsy. A sleep disorders clinic or sleep lab confirm the diagnosis of narcolepsy with the help of polysomnogram (PSG) and the multiple sleep latency test (MSLT). The PSG is an overnight examination carried out when the patient is asleep. The PSG registers the abnormalities of the sleep cycle. The MSLT is performed during the day to estimate a person’s tendency to fall asleep. As part of the test, a patient may be asked to take several short naps. In rare cases, the GP will calculate hypocretin (orexin) rate. Hypocretin is the neurotransmitter that administrates arousal, awakening, and appetite.
